I’d like to share a prayer with you. This is translated from the Aramaic version of the “Lord’s Prayer” as it was found in the Nag Hammadi scrolls. It is remnant of the time prior to organized Christianity as we know it. In the book Shamans of the World, editor Nancy Connor includes it as an ending to the many beautiful stories of indigenous healing beliefs. It is her blessing to the reader. I am grateful to her for including it, as it inspired me, and I’d like to include it here, and pass it on with this same blessing to you.
O cosmic birther of all radiance and vibration!
Soften the ground of our being and create a space within us
where your presence can abide.
Fill us with your creativity so that we may be empowered
to bear the fruit of your mission.
Let each of our actions bear fruit in accordance with our desire.
Endow us with the wisdom to produce and share
what each being needs to grow and flourish.
Untie the tangled threads of destiny that bind us,
as we release others from the entanglement of past mistakes.
Do not let us be seduced by that which would divert us from our true purpose,
but illuminate the opportunities of the present moment.
For you are the ground and fruitful vision, the birthpower and fulfillment,
as all is gathered and made whole once again.
As someone interested in the body as an energetic form, I love that the divine is referred to as the “cosmic birther of all radiance and vibration.” We are vibratory beings, and our inner radiance is what we bring to this earth and to each other. It is the divine spark that is within us all – that is within all of life. The prayer emphasizes the need for each of us to do that which most energizes us, to do that which we love doing. In this way we will be most radiant, and we will be the most healing for this world. Our creativity, the prayer intimates, is a gift from the divine, and to create is to “bear the fruit of your [the divine’s] mission” as well as to “produce and share / what each being needs to grow and flourish.”
What more could we ask but to live according to our highest purpose, create according to the divine spark within us, and in this way be the seeds or fertilizer for other beings to grow and flourish. It is as Dr. Usui, the founder of Reiki, said, “Be kind to all living creatures.” We are here for each other, and our highest purpose is to joyfully create that which other beings need in order to live. Even breathing is a gift, when this world is in balance, as the trees need our carbon dioxide in order to flourish — just as we need their oxygen. The beauty of this world and this life is in the interconnection, the balance, and the joy that comes from living.
Let us hope that it is not too late for each of us to being living in such a way that we do discover our truest purpose in each present moment so that all can be “gathered and made whole once again.”
