Summer Solstice

Today is the Summer Solstice, the longest day and the shortest night of the year. Contrast this with the Winter Solstice, in December for us, the longest night and the shortest day of the year. You can see the symbolism in both: in the Winter we are withdrawing somewhat, contemplating, meditating, and sowing seeds in the darkness to flourish in the summer sun. In the summer we are engaged and active, moving forward with our goals.

Today is a time to remember who you are and why you are here. It is a time to take stock of all facets of your life: mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical, and think of the things you must do to bring yourself to balance. What must you create? What dreams must you manifest? What is on the horizon and in what ways do you need to become strong to be ready to embrace the oncoming gifts? For these gifts are all around you, and they will be coming in these warm months.

Get outside. See the guidance from nature. The turtles, the frogs, the snakes, the raccoons, the deer, the foxes, the bobcats, the song birds, the hawks – they are fully awake in this season, and watching you, helping you, guiding you. Fledglings are learning to survive. Kits, cubs, goslings, pups, calves, fawns, and all new creatures are blending into the forest and the fields, learning the stealth and wonder that comes with survival. You, too, have fledgling dreams and goals, just learning to survive on their own. Watch them carefully. Give them freedom when it is safe, and protect them when danger is near.

All of creation is moving in this season, moving towards wholeness and adulthood. You and your dreams are no different. Embrace it and live it, for now is no time for hibernation, now is the time to find your wings. We have many warm months ensuing for practice and manifestation, I wish you luck.

Above all, remember in this time of activity, that we are no greater than the one being of life that sustains us – the earth and all life forms upon it. Bless this earth and all creatures and dreams making their way upon it. We must give way to turtles; we must make way for frogs; we must leave trees for the songbirds, the hawks, the owls; we must keep the water clean for the fish, the aquatic plants, and for ourselves.

As the Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers say:

WE, THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF THIRTEEN INDIGENOUS GRANDMOTHERS, represent a global alliance of prayer, education and healing for our Mother Earth, all Her inhabitants, all the children, and for the next seven generations to come. We are deeply concerned with the unprecedented destruction of our Mother Earth and the destruction of indigenous ways of life. We believe the teachings of our ancestors will light our way through an uncertain future. We look to further our vision through the realization of projects that protect our diverse cultures: lands, medicines, language and ceremonial ways of prayer and through projects that educate and nurture our children.

This Summer Solstice remember, in all that you plan and all that you do, that we must act in such a way as to help this planet survive for the next seven generations. Think, with each decision and with each action, will this help our planet thrive again? Now, in this time of fertility and fecundity, let us be grateful, and let us rededicate ourselves to our truest purpose upon the planet.

Stonehenge is a reminder that we have always known the importance of the seasons and the natural flow of life on earth. We have not forgotten: notice these beautiful pictures from the Washington Post of those celebrating at dawn at Stonehenge this morning.

  1. I was forwarded this beautiful dolphin meditation today via email. The music is by Deva Premal and Miten, and the video of the dolphins swimming is stunning. The request is that we bless the earth’s water today, June 21st. If you are looking for a moment of peace, you might enjoy watching this:
